How to NOT Raise a Narcissist?

How to NOT Raise a Narcissist: 3 Key Strategies for Parents

Attune to Your Child in an Appropriate Way

Avoid giving fake or exaggerated compliments, such as “You’re the best,” “You’re so special,” or “You’re perfect.” Instead, spend quality time with your child.

Only offer compliments when they come from the heart and are genuine.

Engage with your child by asking questions like, “What are you doing?” and truly listen to their response.

Be fully present during interactions. Put away your phone and avoid distractions. If your child calls for your attention, pause what you’re doing and give them your full focus.

Listen to Their Needs Without Judgment

When your child expresses a desire—even if it’s something you don’t personally like, such as a video game—avoid reacting with frustration or disapproval. Instead, ask why they want it and show understanding.

Offer alternatives if necessary, but never shame or dismiss their needs. For example, if they want to play a video game and you’d prefer to read a book together, suggest both activities. This helps them feel secure and valued.

Fulfilling their desires (within reason) and offering alternatives ensures they feel loved and supported.

Show Affection and Be Available

Make time for your child. If you’re busy, postpone other tasks or delegate them to someone else.

If you can’t be present, ensure your child is cared for by a trusted babysitter or caregiver. A good babysitter can provide the attention and care your child needs when you’re unavailable.

Avoid using your child for social media content, such as posting selfies or oversharing about them. If you do share online, be authentic—express your true feelings or share something meaningful and inspiring.

Teach Values Like Gratitude and Humility

Educate your child about the dangers of self-praise, bragging, and arrogance. Explain that these behaviors are harmful and can lead to narcissistic tendencies.

Encourage gratitude by teaching them to say “thank you” for both positive and negative experiences.

Emphasize the importance of humility and kindness over self-centeredness.

Final Thoughts

A narcissist struggles to love themselves and others genuinely. By fostering empathy, gratitude, and humility, you can help your child develop healthy self-esteem and strong relationships.

Avoid promoting narcissistic behaviors, and instead, focus on raising a child who values others and practices gratitude.
