Episode 6, remain humble

Nearly 40 years ago, my friend and I were climbing in the Italian Dolomite… The Eldorado for mountain climbing and skying…

It is so awesome and exciting to climb the vertical rock walls with a fixed steal robe…

We climbed through the cave tunnels, constructed in WWI to kill the enemies… my grandfather was one of them…

And then we climbed the Cristallo Cortina, slept on 3400m in an icy hut, and drinking tea…

In the morning, we like to climb down….
The first snow was coming down…

It was very slippery, slowly we climbed down… Suddenly the weather changed, and it was snowing like crazy… For that, the Dolomite is famous, that from a blue sky, the weather can change to snowing within 15 minutes…

Still, we kept climbing … the massive rock wall was very steep and also the track … we had to go along this wall, the path was 50cm wide, and you could look directly down 500m, one small step wrong … your life is over…

And then an avalanche dropped down, the path was destroyed, and we are desperate…. My Grandfather, a great mountain climber, died through that!

We were pressing our body against the rock, not to get hit by an avalanche… It was terrible…

My friend said we have only one chance to climb immediately up to the hut… That means 3 hours up… We returned and tried our best to go up as fast as possible without risking to slip down ….

After 2 hours, I got the infamous mountain sickness … I didn’t mention anything, and I was climbing in a total trance, one step after the next… I knew I had the power to overcome everything… Don’t care, just go… Even I was getting so dizzy that I puke, my heart was pounding like crazy…

The last 500m was the worst … My friend saw me and said stop, you have to go down immediately… Never, I can’t … we reached the hut, and I cried… and could not stop crying, it was too much… Quite a lot of mountaineers were sitting in front of the door, and I was crying, and it was so humiliating… They didn’t care, many accidents happened …

2days ago, we had celebrated our 2.5-hour climb of the big 1000m wall, it was a record… even done by people from a flat area… now I was crying and mountain sick…

The defeat can come every moment in our life without any warning… Be prepared, and bragging makes everything worse!
